CUBAN INTERNATIONAL TOURISM FAIR TO BE HELD IN MAY
By Cory Lopez
February 19, Havana. WORLD DATA SERVICE.- Cuban economic authorities have
started in advance preparedness for the International Tourism Fair that
regularly enables to widen communication among local entities in contact with
various tourist issuing countries from across the world.
Cuban Minister of Tourism reported that in May, 2005, the 25th edition of the
Fair will take place at the open plaza Morro-Cabaña located on the other side of
Havana harbour. It's actually an exhibit salas and meeting-rooms complex
operating within the enclosure of the former colonial fortress San Carlos de la
Cabaña.
The event's Organizing Committee said to the media it's the most important
gathering of its kind held on the island every year.
Cubans are to present to foreign guests - basically Europeans - key tourist
destinations here in the capital, Havana, and in the eastern city of Santiago de
Cuba, second in importance on the island. The source said tour operators of
Europe, America, Asia and the Caribbean will attend.
A breaking news about the upcoming Fair is that France and China are to join
the array of guest countries. Cuba hopes to broadly increase the presence of
Chinese tourists in its facilities at foreign tourism areas.
Cuba's leisure industry received a million 48 thousand lodgers in 2004 and aims
at increasing such figure this year. Far more long-term plans point to receiving
3 million tourists a year.

EUROPE cooperates with AN anti-drug course for Cuba and the Caribbean
By FRANCISCO FORTEZA
February 19, Havana. WORLD DATA SERVICE.- Europe resumed its struggle against
drug trafficking collaboration with Cuba and other Caribbean nations by
providing teachers for giving a regional course in Havana this week.
The program organized by the island's Anti-Drug National Management (DNA; its
initials in Spanish language) in collaboration with the English and French
Embassies to Havana and the Martinique's Inter-Ministerial Center for Anti-Drug
Formation is to train Cuban personnel and half a dozen Caribbean countries
officers acting in line with the fight against drug trafficking.
It's reported that events like this one aim at reinforcing training for the
said purpose-involved personnel. Also it provides communication and exchange
among experts from Belize, Cuba, Curacao, Haiti, Jamaica and the Dominican
Republic.
General Jesús Becerra of the DNA of Cuba's Interior Ministry stressed the
importance of the course at the opening session.
"Cuba has always maintained a tight political willingness in the fight against
narcotics so prohibiting the use of its national territory to support and
harbour law fugitive criminals", as underlined the ranking official.
Becerra said that international unity is required and even emphasized his
country is ready to collaborate in this regard with the United States, although
the administration of that nation has not accepted it.
"They have rejected our offer but to my guesstimate they are the ones that
took the worst part in this matter, because the highest drug percentage traded
through the Caribbean pursues to get to its final destination; the United State
territory".
Lessons and lectures are given by English and French expert contact officers
appointed to the Caribbean.
John Dew, Ambassador of Great Britain and Northern Ireland to Cuba told the
situation in the Caribbean regarding drug trade requires upgrading of
operational techniques.
At the anti-drug international course inauguration session held in Havana Jean
Michel González, attaché of the International Technical Cooperation Service of
the French Police and other European officials were present.

More State-run services TO the Cuban people
By FRANCISCO FORTEZA
February 19, Havana. WORLD DATA SERVICE. - A Cuban Parliament Commission has
announced that domestic trade authorities aim at gradually restoring state-run
high demand services and charge them in traditional local peso, which so
seriously was hit last decade.
The Services Assistance Commission of the National Assembly of the People's
Power met last week in order to analyze the re-establishment of a state-ruled
public services network including barber's shops, hairdressers´ , footwear and
cooker repair units and laundromats charged in local currency.
Following the decision adopted by Cuban authorities in October last year to
de-dollarize the island's economy, Cuban convertible peso (cuc) began
circulating in its equivalent to 26 units of traditional local peso.
The great decline of state-run high demand/cost-effective services that pushed
the island into the ´90s deep economic crisis made a cloud of legal freelancers
and other dealers who somehow managed to escape cuc-charged taxes show up.
Now and framed into the Parliament Commission's analysis, Cuban Domestic Trade
Minister (MINCIN; according to its initials in Spanish), Bárbara Castillo
Cuesta, announced that by the end of the present year, more than 900 barber's
shops and hairdressers´ will be at service nationwide.
In addressing the Commission co-headed by Carlos Lage, Secretary of the
Executive Committee of the Council of Ministers and Ricardo Alarcón, president
of the Cuban Parliament, the MINCIN´s minister said "the government makes an
effort to ease problems accumulated in this regard".
Castillo included footwear and cooker repair units as well as laundromats,
barber's shops and hairdressers´ service installations in the restoration plan.
She further explained it's foreseen to increase home refrigerator repairs when
the appliance's motor-compressor is damaged and to replace certain parts.
But the minister clarified "the great number of repair pending cases so
accumulated in the last few years in relation to home refrigerator problems
won't be totally covered yet".
She emphasized these services " will be destined to prioritize the
population's social cases and the disable in need of aid".
It was also highlighted that the increase of services is destined primarily to
"those people who pay in traditional local pesos ".
A great majority of the Cuban population officially cashes in peso-salary. Those
who previously received, in one way or another, any sort of dollar-remuneration,
and that now get cuc or else U.S. dollar will have to change it into Cuban peso,
too, dubbed convertible peso thereafter used in any domestic official
transactions.
The head said this new measures " show just the tip of the first stage in the
efforts to recover several services, for which expectations around giving a
likely comprehensive response to so many problems accumulated in years should
not be created".
She precised "the question, in short, deals with starting improvements
step-by-step so as to enable the population to find solutions as long as the
country´s financial responses are possible.

CUBA ranks 25th on the list of U.S. agri-food products purchasers
By FRANK MARTIN
February 19, Havana. WORLD DATA SERVICE.- Trade between Cuba and U.S. agri-food
suppliers only based on Cuban food purchases is been restrained and threatened
by the White House what makes the island be in the 25 th place among the nation
purchasers of U.S. food products as a special source revealed in New York.
These Cuban imports began at the end of 2001 as a result of a law approved by
U.S. Congress in 2000 and a license granted by its Federal Government.
However, trade already surpassed a thousand million dollars in assets
irrespective of restrictions burdened upon it due to an over-four-decade trade
blockade that U.S. has imposed to Cuba.
At the time George W. Bush administration gave the green light for
eliminating such Cuban purchases, a New York-based trade-analysis body reported
that Cuban agri-food product imports in 2003 had held the 35th place and that
now the 25th .
John Kavulich, president of the US-Cuba Trade and Economic Council in New York
said Cuba's jump up in the U.S. chart of nations importing its food products was
revised " within a very damaged atmosphere existing between the two nations".
A report released on Monday by the Council reads that " the 2004 closing data
sheet showed Cuban purchases amounted $ 391.9 million for what it had gained the
25th place ".
The same report says that Cuba was in the place 144 in 2001 and in the 50 in
2002.
Nevertheless, the analysis showed that trade's increase rate lowered since
Bush's anti-Cuban measures were toughened. The Council reckoned the fall at 30%
in the last four months in 2004 before equal period in 2003.
The fall down period coincide with the announcement made public by U.S. Treasury
Department in reference to being studying a new move against that trade. At the
same time, that body "frozen" Cuban payments made to its providers and already
deposited at U.S. banks.
U.S. farming producers - so much affected by a global fall of their sales and
the White House's plans, which, should they have been applied, would have shrunk
their transaction financial capacities - sent a letter to President Bush
demanding the non-interference in their trade affairs with Cubans.
In this month, Republican and Democrat senators also presented before the
Congress a motion pursuing to impede the application of Bush's measures and the
introduction of clauses that can even improve it.
Official Cuban sources have said here in Havana that should U.S. blockade vs.
Cuba not exist, trade with North-America suppliers could well raise up to $ 21
thousand million a year.
Nearly 90% of Cuban imports of U.S. products made in 2004 were basically
essentials such as rice, corn, chicken, wheat, grains, powder milk and other
commodities.
