In brief some facts about the crisis in Greece

The situation in Greece is a manifestation of a typical capitalist economic crisis, that is, a crisis of overproduction and over accumulation of capital. It highlights the sharpening of the contradiction labor-capital, the conflict between the social production and the capitalist appropriation of the results.

For almost two decades Greece was marking a growth at rates around 4% annually.
In 1990 the PIB of Greece was 38 billions of euros. In 2007 it reached 208 billions, which is 5.5 times more. The net profits of the big companies in 1990 were 575 millions. In 2007 they reached 16 billions of euros, that is 28 times more! At the same time the standard of life of the workers was worsening..

In 2009 we witness a decline of the GDP, as well as negative changes in manufacturing and the capital product, devaluation of capital in all its forms (commercial, financial), decline of investments, and increase of business closures. The drop in the industrial production, particularly in the manufacturing sector existed even when Greece had a high growth rate. The large deficit and the high debt are not an unprecedented phenomenon. Nevertheless, these specific indexes in Greece are more sharpened and combined.

This derives from the adjustment of Greece to the EU, under conditions of liberalisation of the market, due to the unevenness that characterises the capitalist world, the imperialist pyramid. It is also significant the fact that Greece is in a geographical region where is manifested greater sharpening of the intra-impehalist contradictions. The competition between the euro and the dollar has a special impact on Greece.

Last summer, the previous ND government gave, with the agreement of PASOK, 28 billion of euros to the Greek banks (which at the same time have bought about the 1/3 of the country’s debt).

The government has declared war against the rights of the working class. According to the official data poverty exceeds 20% (the poverty line that they set is incredible: 972 € per month for family of 4 members. Impossible even to survive) , while the unemployment reached 14.6% (without counting those that work even a few hours a week, or the ones that now seek job for first time).

The government’s policy prescribes reduction of salaries and pensions, increase of taxation, further blows in the industrial relations, the healthcare, the social security, the education. The measures taken and announce are exactly the same at all European countries, they follow the guidelines of the “Lisbon Strategy” of the EU.
In particular, regarding the pension system, they will increase the retirement age to 67, and reduce the pensions that are already extremely low. The current statues of the pensions (without counting the pensions of the peasants that are 380 €) is as following:
- 31.4% of the pensioners receive up to 450 €
- 29.3% have pension from 450-600 €
- 11.7% from 600-750 €

The changes promoted by the government will deliver a further blow, completely cutting of the salary from the pension. They will set a general social pension of 360 € (and this will be distributed according to … income criteria, meaning that it will not be for all), and the rest is responsibility of the worker, what he will concentrate during his work life. We estimate that it will lead to a general decrease of pensions up to - 40%. An inhuman pension system resulting from an equally inhuman social system.

The government also puts new heavy burdens to the popular strata with the changes in the taxation system, while at the same time lowers even more the taxation of the enterprises.

Our party has been ideologically and politically prepared to deal with the economic crisis as we had predicted the crisis a long before its outbreak and we had proceeded to the analysis of the situation of the Greek economy under the conditions of the integration to the EU.

The exit from the crisis cannot be achieved without questioning the capitalist ownership and power. This does not mean that it's worthless the movement to promote goals and demands that will rally forces in the struggle as was demonstrated by the great mobilisations in our country, profoundly marked by the action and positions of our party. However, the defence and some limited improvement can neither be the beginning nor the ending of the struggle.

It is necessary apart from the goals and demands of the struggle to determine the direction of the conflict with the monopolies and their power, the opposition to the capitalist system, to promote the necessity of socialism. Otherwise the movement will be assimilated.

Our demand that plutocracy must pay for the crisis and that the people should not pay even a single euro for the debts and the deficit exerts influence on broad non-communist forces. We highlighted the course of the development of the Greek capitalism; we explained what crisis is, what does exit from the crisis mean.

We pinpoint the fact that even during the crisis the profits increase. For example in 2009 the operative profits of the companies (including those with damages) that are integrated to the Athens Stock Market reached 10.5 billions of euros marking an increase of 6.2% as compared with 2008! Only in 2009 the ship-owners ordered the building of 777 new ships.

There are industrial braches that emerge dynamically (eg construction, transport, energy, chemical industry, food industry, refineries, pharmaceutical industry, while some traditional ones decline. There are also some dynamic braches developing in services.

Greece possesses all the potential the material prerequisites to shape and develop a people’s economy. It has a satisfactory level of centralisation of production and the means of production, as well as a commercial network and a certain level of development of modern technology. Above all, it has a large, experienced working class, with an improved level of education and skills, and a large pool of capable scientists and professionals. It has important natural resources, such as significant reserves of the mineral wealth necessary to produce industrial and consumer products. It has comparative advantages in the production of high quality foodstuffs. It has the potential to produce modern products, machinery, tools and appliances.

The only and really obstacle is the capitalist ownership, the capitalist rule.
