http://www.seo.org/2003/08/030814_1/).
¿Cómo podemos ayudar desde AvesForum? De dos formas:
1) Firmando una protesta contra el trasvase en
http://www.birdlife.net/action/campaigns/iba_campaign/help/ebro.html

Querido/a amigo/a:
Necesitamos tu firma.
ayúdanos a pararlo"

Help stop the Ebro water transfer now
The Ebro delta, one of the most important wetlands in Europe, will
disappear if a plan goes ahead to divert its waters to the south-east
region over 1,000km away.On December 16th, the European Commissioner for
the Environment, Margot Wallström, pressured by the Spanish Government,
will decide upon the legality of the Ebro water transfer project. It's
likely that the decision will be in favour of the project, despite its
negative impacts and illegality according to EU directives. If the
scheme is approved, the European Commissioner for Regional Policy, Mr.
Barnier, will provide the funds that Spain needs to build this project.
We need your help NOW to save the Ebro delta and to stop the devastating
Ebro Water Transfer.
A spectacular wetland threatened...
Spain's plan to divert 1050 hm3 of Ebro water each year to the
south-east region is equal to one third of the total Spanish domestic
water consumption.
The Spanish government says the water is needed for the agri-business
sector that covers much of southern Spain, but it's also likely to fund
uncontrolled urban development and promote an increase in tourism in a
region already blighted by concrete, in the form of hotels and apartment
buildings.
Many independent experts oppose the plan. They say it's an antiquated
response to former water supply problems and does not take account of
modern water management techniques.
Wildlife at risk
---------------------
Under the plan the delta will dry up and erode. BirdLife is concerned
that resident plants and animals will disappear and visitng birds from
across Europe and Africa will no longer be able to stop in the delta on
their migratory route.
At least 55 bird species including the Sandwich Tern and Audouins Gull,
will be adversely impacted by the scheme and 18 habitats will be
severely affected.
Local communities to suffer
------------------------------------------
Fifty-thousand people live in the delta and 500.000 people visit the
wetland each year.
For the local population this project means their rice fields will not
have enough water or nutrient rich sediment. Fisheries will also suffer
as stocks are depleted by the shrinking delta. Many families may be
forced to leave the delta where they have lived for generations.

Stop the Ebro Water Transfer now
--------------------------------------------------
Help us to stop the building of the Ebro Water Transfer by signing our
e-petition which will be sent to Commissioner Wallström and Commissioner
Barnier - urging them to declare the Ebro Water Transfer illegal and to
oppose funding the project with EU money.
