Martin Luther King Jr. said these words to striking Memphis sanitation
workers the day before he was assassinated in April 1968. This Monday,
Jan. 16, is Martin Luther King Day, a national holiday honoring the
Civil Rights leader and the movement he led.

Some 50 sanitation workers employed by the city of Charlotte and their
supporters protested and rallied at the City Council's bi-monthly
"Citizens Forum" on Jan. 2. They demanded union recognition--North
Carolina state law does not allow collective bargaining rights for
public employees.

Roadside bombs, bullets and a helicopter crash killed 17 U.S. troops and
civilian officials in Iraq on the second weekend of 2006. Added to the
11 troops killed on the Thursday before the weekend started, this was
one of the deadliest periods of the war for the U.S. military.
